Green hair and swimming!
I had a question from the audience on green hair and swimming in chlorinated pools. After a bit of research, here's what I've concluded:
- It has to do with the minerals that are dissolved in it (eg, iron, copper, etc) (not really about the chlorine)
- Our hair takes up these minerals and "holds" them in a state that turns color (think copper and how it turns bluish-green when oxidized).
- Blondes show this color the most, because it's the lightest hair - it's also in brunettes but it shows less against the brown.
- Gray hair is a double whammy - not only is it light/white, but also it's more porous.
So, that's the "what is going on?". How to prevent it? My research suggests applying a thick conditioner to damp hair before swimming, and then covering it with a tight swim cap. The conditioner will coat the hair (preventing exposure to the water), and the cap will limit water getting to the air at all.
Finally, there are products to remove the chlorine and minerals from hair after swimming - I've seen them on grocery shelves. I tried one once when I was practicing for a triathlon - it was okay, but not a good product for general use as it dried my hair out. NOT my best look as my hair is very curly and it get's fly-away way to easily.

No problem about the formatting. Proud of you for getting a post up! I haven't posted to my blog for over a year. Didn't have the heart for it for awhile. Heart's re-appearing, slowly , slowly.
